The women’s basketball team overcame Modesto City College 64-58 on Tuesday at home.
The first quarter was the closest of the game, finishing 18-14 in favor of the Hawks. The team dominated in the remaining quarters with a combined 41 rebounds to hold on to the lead.
A strong defensive effort, which included seven blocked shots, was crucial to let the offense explode, assistant coach Angela DaPrato said.
“I saw great energy, I saw us being connected, us really just playing harder than them and as coaches that’s things we wanna continue to do,” head coach Samuel Kirby said.
In their last matchup on Jan. 2, the Hawks lost to the Pirates 62-56. However, one key difference for this game was the presence of sophomore guard Saray White, Kirby said.
Offensively, White ended the night leading the team in points and assists with 30 and five respectively, on top of converting 11 of 18 shots.
Defensively, White won seven rebounds and had a key block late in the fourth quarter, when the point difference was six.
“This is my last year, so I go into every game like it’s my last,” White said.
The Hawks had previously lost to the Sacramento City Panthers 67-62 on Jan. 24.
“Playing Sac City, our energy was not the best and our communication was off,” freshman center Arianna Butler said. “Learning from our mistakes against Sac City, we communicated a lot better and kept our energy up.”
The Hawks later faced #5 Folsom Lake College on Friday losing 63-69.
With five matches left in the regular season, the Hawks’ next game is at home against #10 San Joaquin Delta College on Tuesday.
