The pool has been closed until further notice for repairs, according to a sign posted outside of the pool gates and locker rooms.
Chris Raines, director of administrative services and campus operations, said a leak in the pool’s pipe system was causing 4,000 gallons of water to be lost every day.
“The pool was closed to isolate where the leak was at and assure that there was no erosion underneath the pool deck or pool itself that would cause a safety issue,” Raines said.
The pool has been closed for over seven weeks, since they noticed the leak.
Raines said at the moment, there is no estimated end date for repairs.
“Until we ascertain where the leak is at, do the repairs and assess there is no long term standing safety issues, only once all those have been assured and boxes are checked, the pool will be reopened,” Raines said.
The cost of repairs will be fully covered by the district, Raines said.
Inline Contracting, the company hired by the district, came in to oversee repairs, Raines said. Inline is familiar with the Cosumnes River College campus, as they came in to repair a hot water line that had broken in front of the Child Development Center in the winter of 2023.
Similar to that repair, they will dig down through the concrete to the piping, which is seven feet below ground level, to find and cut the leaking section out and put a new pipe in, Raines said.
The pool’s closure also affects the CRC swim team, which is currently in season competing at the 3C2A championship.
“It makes it hard to get to practice,” said 19-year-old swimmer Amad Rahim. “Instead of walking down to the pool, I have to get a ride, take the bus down and I have to leave earlier.”
CRC offers three different swim classes, which have been moved to Sacramento City College for the time being, Raines said.
The closure also affects swim teams from Laguna Creek High School and Monterey Trail High School, which regularly used the pool for meets throughout their season, Raines said.
“It has definitely made it a lot harder in terms of training,” said 19-year-old swimmer Jonah Mafnas.
CRC now practices at Parkway Swimming Club on Centre Parkway, which is about 10 minutes away from campus, Mafnas said.
