The Associated Students of Cosumnes River College along with The Student Life and Leadership Center hosted their annual Hawk Days on the quad on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Every fall semester, campus organizations and clubs gather around the quad to provide students with information and flyers of what they can find on campus. Along with the information tables, the event provided food trucks, games and music.
Kayla Anaya, the Student Life and Leadership Center supervisor, said the goal of the event was to create student life on campus.
“It’s just a time for students to get out, see what’s going on, play some games, connect with their friends, meet new friends,” she said.
Anaya said that even though this event is mostly student centered, faculty and staff also get to learn about new clubs, connect with each other and visit the food trucks.
A lot of students did not know about the event, many stating that they heard the music blasting or saw the commotion on the way to class, but were not disappointed when they stumbled upon it.
Dunia Ahadi, 20-year-old pre-nursing major, said the event really helped her discover what the campus has to offer..
“I found a lot of stuff that I didn’t really know existed,” Ahadi said.
Ahadi said that she found herself gravitating towards booths related to her major such as the psychology club and the health club. She found that immersing herself with clubs similar to her major will help her find jobs and internships in her field.
Hawk Days had many tables that supported different cultures, majors, hobbies and disabilities.
After attending the event,19-year-old business administration major, Malia Wong, joined the Asian Pacific Islander Desi American club.
“It really resonates with me as an Asian American,” Wong said. “I definitely feel represented at the school and I am really excited to see that.”
Wong said that she hoped that joining a learning resource club will help with her motivation. Wong also said that having people around you that have common goals provides a great support system.
Learning resource clubs are clubs that provide members with academic support and point members in the right direction, providing the right tools they need to succeed. According to the APIDA club, students in their club are given success coaches and mentors, priority registration, field trips to college campuses and workshops for skills-building and financial literacy.
Ahadi pointed out that she was surprised to see such a great turnout.
“It is a good event that we have. It encourages people to come out because there aren’t a lot of people just out here,” Ahadi said. “It’s good to see people outside actually enjoying the sun.”
