The Nest hosted an event for student-parents to bring their kids to campus on March 23.

The event is called “Music, Movement, and Stories with The Nest” and took place in the Child Development Center. Nest Coordinator Jeannette Mulhern said she wanted the event to be a place for kids to play while student-parents can study.

“I wanted to create a safe space where student-parents could continue their education and wouldn’t have to worry about their toddlers,” Mulhern said.

The event opened with Elham Ghalab, early childhood development administration/teacher, interacting with the kids in a singing activity.

Ghalab said she loves what she does and wants to help in the community with the kids in any way she can.

“It makes me feel good knowing that I helped,” Ghalab said.

During the event, the front desk team gave details about the Nest and what they do and the services they provide such as support for parents, childcare, youth tutoring from ages 3 to 11 and family support.

The Nest Support and Coaching Specialist Emely Salgado said she’s an early childhood education and teaching major because she wanted to deal with kids for her career.

Salgado did a storytime activity with the kids to create movement by doing a stretch exercise and singing a song.

The event closed out with indoor recess of four different activities for kids to choose with painting, reading and playing with puppets, playing with blocks and playing indoor basketball.

Salgado said she loves ECE, but dealing with the kids can be a little challenging.

“The kids would be so full of energy, but it is a field I love working in,” Salgado said.

Salgado said the event is a good place for student-parents to bring their kids to.

“They could just bring them to school with them and the toddler would be able to grow and learn as well,” Salgado said.

The next “Music, Movement, and Stories with The Nest” is on April 27 from 10-11 a.m. in the Child Development Center.
