Amidst President Donald Trump’s executive order on gender ideology, the Gender Health Center, located in Sacramento, provides services to Los Rios students.
The Gender Health Center is a non-profit organization that brings wellness and services to people who identify with the LGBTQ+ and BIPOC communities, according to their website.
“This is the first time GHC has been able to offer a mental health program specifically for Los Rios students,” said Malaya Manacop, associate clinician of GHC. “We are actively eliminating those barriers and ensuring that students feel seen, valued, and supported.”
The executive order, Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government, which was signed Jan. 20, calls for the federal government to recognize only two genders, male and female, according to the White House website.
“We made a lot of efforts to go forward, move forward to move to more inclusivity,” said 20-year-old psychology major Bella Brusa. “And I think them having a cap on it, like ‘Oh, this or that,’ it does kind of interfere with diversity and inclusivity.”
Besides the free therapy, the services offered by GHC include mental health support groups, a clothing closet, a harm reduction clinic and a hormone therapy clinic, according to their website.
“The clothing closet is a resource for trans and nonbinary individuals who need gender-affirming clothing,” said Manacop. “It offers clothing, accessories and gender affirming items, binders, gaffs, packers, etc., to help students express themselves authentically and feel comfortable in their identities.”
The GHC also offers resources for youths, such as Pro Youth Services, as well as website links to community centers, such as the Sacramento LGBT Center, according to the GHC website.
“GHC also provides case management services through our Community Support Services team,” said Manacop. “GHC also has a Harm Reduction Services team that provides mobile outreach and supply distribution services to community members who may not have access to transportation to get the necessary supplies they need.”
Students can get access to the free therapy and other services from GHC by filling out a referral form on the college website under the mental health and wellness services tab.
