Many Cosumnes River College students are unaware they can still apply for scholarships to help with expenses. Applications are due Friday, and students can simply apply on the Los Rios Colleges Foundation website.
Donor relations specialist Elizabeth Starbuck said that even though some students may worry they won’t get any scholarships, they should still apply.
“We have about 15,000 students at CRC and I maybe had 1,000 students apply last year,” Starbuck said. “So yeah, the chances are really, really good, but you have to apply.”
Mohamed Hasan, a 19-year-old psychology major, said he didn’t know CRC offered scholarships.
“Yes, I plan on applying for scholarships, but I did not know there were any,” Hasan said.
One scholarship offered is the “CRC Do Your Best” Scholarship, donated by former CRC Dean and Professor of Communication Studies, Colette Harris-Mathews.
Harris-Matthews said she donated this scholarship so that every student can have a chance to earn a scholarship for simply doing their best.
“They simply have to write a statement of doing their best and there’s a minimal GPA requirement because I wanted it to be more accessible to more [students],” Harris-Mathews said.
Harris-Mathews said that there is no fee to apply which allows the process of applying for scholarships easy and affordable.
Bria King, an 18-year-old traditional Chinese medicine major, said that even though she knew of the scholarships, she will not be filling any out this year.
“I’m not going to apply for any scholarships this year because I’m still in my first year.” King said.
Starbuck said that it is very common for first-year-students to not apply for scholarships because they think they don’t qualify. However, she said that if students have completed at least six units and are currently enrolled in six units, then they are qualified.
“Many students do not apply because they perceive that ‘I’m not gonna be rewarded,’ but apply, apply, apply,” Harris-Mathews said.
