The baseball team’s offense propelled them to a 9-7 win over Napa Valley College on Saturday.
After starting the season 1-6, the Hawks have won four of their last five games.
Sophomore infielder Alan Quirarte-Guzman credits the team’s turnaround to the players being more accountable.
“We honestly just started holding each other accountable,” Quirarte-Guzman said. “We have a team system now where anyone that makes a mental mistake is going to end up doing hill sprints.”
Freshman pitcher Christian Rambeau started his first game of the season and threw two and a third scoreless innings. He was the first of five pitchers that entered the game for the Hawks.
The Hawks scored first in the second inning with a sacrifice fly from freshman infielder Jason Alexander.
The Napa Valley Storm responded by taking the lead, scoring five runs in the fifth inning.
The Hawks offense responded with four hits in the bottom of the fifth which included a two-run home run from freshman infielder Brent Martin that put the Hawks up by three runs.
Sophomore outfielder Angelo Nunes said the Hawks were able to get back into the game because of the strong mentality the team has.
“We are always fighting back– we gave up a five spot, and then we put up a five spot,” Nunes said. “It’s just about working hard and being some dawgs.”
The Storm scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning making the score eight to seven in favor of the Hawks. Sophomore outfielder Kenyon Sanders gave the Hawks an insurance run with a solo home run in the bottom of the inning.
Freshman outfielder Jaylen Dawson said the Hawks offense has been coming together the past couple of games.
“We have been very plugged in the past couple of days,” Dawson said. “Just swinging the bats more, jumping on pitches, getting on top of the plate and seeing off-speed pitches very well.”
Despite the win, the Hawks struggled at times defensively and made four errors in the game.
In his talk with the team after the game, head coach Don Mico emphasized the importance of cleaning up their defense to the team.
Quirarte-Guzman said despite the win, the players are aware there are still aspects of the game where they can execute better.
“We were happy we got the win, but defensively we didn’t do well, but our offense came back to help us out and get the win today,” Quirarte-Guzman said.
The Hawks next game is at home against the West Valley Vikings on Friday at 12 p.m.
